Due to the impact of the coronavirus pandemic which is currently ravaging around the world, the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) along with the authorities of the League Management Company (LMC) has announced the cancellation of the 2020 Nigerian Professional Football League season.
The NFF adopted a Points Per Game (PPG) model to chose teams that will represent the country in the CAF champions league and the CAF confederation cup.
The top three teams according to the PPG model are table toppers, Plateau United, Rivers United and Enyimba and the fourth team to represent Nigeria will be the champions of last season’s AITEO cup, Kano Pillars.
Plateau United will play in the CAF champions league while the champions of the AITEO cup from last season, Kano Pillars will play in the CAF confederation cup.
Rivers United and Enyimba FC have the same Points Per Game (PPG). Thus, the League Management Company will have to clarify which of the two teams will participate in CAF champions League and CAF confederations cup respectively
In the same vain, the Nigerian National League, NNL, Nigerian Women Football League, NWFL, Nationwide League One, NLO and AITEO cup for the 2019/2020 season have all been cancelled.
The NFF also announced that there will be no promotion or relegation in any of the football tiers in the country due to the aborted league season.
The new season (2020/2021) is expected to kickoff in September/October 2020. But it will be subject to the full reopening of the country and approval from the country’s health authorities.
