Southern Governors Forum: 10 Things The Forum Agreed On.

The Governors of the 17 Southern States of Nigeria consisting of Lagos, Oyo, Ondo, Osun, Ogun, Ekiti, Enugu, Anambara, Imo, Abia, Ebonyi, Rivers, Edo, Delta, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom and Cross River States, met in Lagos yesterday, the 5th of July, to discuss issues of the rising insecurity of the Southern part of Nigeria, which is slowly becoming violent and insecure like the Northern part of Nigeria.

There is perceived injustice in Nigeria depending on religion and geo political zone. Nigeria’s President, Maj Gen Muhammadu Buhari, a Fulani Muslim, from the North, has seemly favoured the North in all ramifications, down to the fact that people who commit crimes in both regions, are giving different treatment.

The Governors from the south, maintained that the ban on open grazing remains, and will take full effect on the 1st of September and that any erring Fulani herdsman will face the wrath of the law.

In the meeting of the Southern Governors Forum, the Governors condemned the attack on the home of the leader of Yoruba Nation agitator, Oloye Sunday Igboho. The Governors also stated categorically, that the next president of Nigeria Must come from the South. The Southern Governors Forum have opposed the removal of electronic transmission of the election result from the electoral act

They also rejected the confirmation of exclusive jurisdiction in pre-election matters on the Federal High Court. Below are 10 things the Southern Governors forum agreed on:

  1. Next President must be a southerner.
  2. Demanded the inclusion of electronic transmission of election result.
  3. Security institutions must inform governors before any operations in their state.
  4. September 1 set for promulgation of anti-open grazing law.
  5. State Police must be created.
  6. Rejected PIB’s proposed 3% share of the oil revenue to the host community. Supports 5%.
  7. Rejected proposed 30% share of profit for the exploration of oil and gas in the basins.
  8. Rejected the ownership structure of the proposed Nigeria National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC).
  9. Rejected the confirmation of exclusive jurisdiction in pre-election matters on the Federal High Court.
  10. Chose Lagos as its permanent secretariat.
